Principal's Statement
Students have the most success in school when they are part of a learning
community. Our vision for Central School is focused on a collaboration between
parents, students, and school staff. We have a great, very experienced staff at
Central, and yet we are always working to improve what we do with children.
Our students have been very successful on the State Assessments, and our school
is regularly rated “Strong” on the State report card. We have several avenues
of participation for parents, including PTA, Site Council, Art Literacy and
volunteering during the school day.
Also part of the learning community collaboration is parents and their
students participating together in the learning process. We have hosted some
evening activities to provide parents and their children opportunities to learn
together. We are working on more ideas in this area. We invite you to become
an active participant by collaborating with your children and their teachers in the
learning process.
Central School and the whole La Grande School District face a big challenge
right now. At Central, we call it “mobility.” Over the past few years, the
number of students moving into and out of Central School during the year has
doubled. We have had as many as 111 changes in one school year, representing
one-fourth of our student body. We have also had many new students come to
Central because of school closures. This presents a serious challenge for our
school community. Helping students feel part of our school and getting parents
involved is important and we want to succeed on both counts. There are many
ways to get involved. Ask your child’s teacher or ask at the office.
